Mobile website design – Why and how?

I’ve been actively browsing the Internet through my smartphones since I bought Samsung Galaxy S.  Why? It’s very convenient checking email and friends’ Facebook status on the go. You don’t need to turn on the PC, plugin the modem, and carrying the bulky 15 inches machine to hook to the Internet. By using the smartphone, it’s very easy. Turn on the Data Network, wait for a couple of seconds and I’m connected. Turn on the mobile browser (Skyfire, Dolphin or the stock Android browser), key in the address and there you have it, your mobile version of Facebook.

What is mobile website design?

Mobile web version means the website is downgrade into simple display to suite the small screen and the less processing capability of the mobile phone. It also means lower resolution graphic (less picture), less client script and lower resolution video.

Mobile browsing is gaining bigger slice of the pie. Thanks to the emergence of smartphones and the war between iPhone OS, Android and WP7.

Some statistics

A new report from Juniper Research says that the number of subscribers using mobile Internet services will rise from 577 million currently, to top 1.7 billion by 2013, spurred by demand for collaborative applications known collectively as 'web 2.0,' and greater 2.5/3G penetration.”

There are more than 250 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices. People that use Facebook on their mobile devices are twice as active on Facebook than non-mobile users.

My personal experience

While checking my friends’ status, I normally stumble upon some interesting links. Tapping the link will bring me to another website, it is a huge disappointment if the suggested link is a full version desktop designed web page. Browsing a desktop version of web page in a small screen is a frustrating experience. In a situation where you only have GPRS connection, the download process is killing your patience. If you have limited Data Network quota (in my case only 500MB per month), you will be thinking twice to view a desktop version web page. Surely you’ll afraid of over-the-quota-fee, which is very expensive (especially in Malaysia).

  2. in my opinion every online business owner and even owners of normal websites and blogs should have a mobile version of their website hosted. Not only it will help in getting the huge amount of visits of people browsing from smart phones but also it will help people access the services of the website from anywhere which i think is very much required today.
